Update to Reference Manager 12

If you are having problems with Reference Manager 12 working with Word 2007 you can download a patch which will solve the problem.  For instructions and download go to  http://www.refman.com/support/rm1202update.asp

Obtaining a Copy

For Your University PC

Reference Manager can be downloaded from MySoftware https://mysoftware.bham.ac.uk - login with your university username and password.  Staff can download directly, whilst postgraduates with a university PC need to ask their staff supervisor or local IT team to download it for them.  More information is available at http://www.softwaresales.bham.ac.uk/az/referencemanager.shtml

For your home PC / personal laptop

You will need a personal copy.  Personal copies (at a reduced price) can be obtained from the Adept Science Website at http://www.adeptscience.co.uk as follows:

  • Click on the Academic Discounts tab
  • Enter the Adept4Education webstore by clicking on Login Now
  • Search for University of Birmingham and click Go
  • Login with your University username and password
  • Click on link to Adept Scientific Academic Software Store
  • Purchase a copy 

Versions of Reference Manager

The latest version of Reference Manager is version 12

Improvements to Reference Manager 12 include:

  • Insert Reference IDs for in text citations and format the bibliography at a later date
  • Use Reference Manager 12 with Track Changes in Word
  • Compatible with Word 2007 and Vista
  • New reference types added including edited book, online source and grant, as well as new fields in many references types, including conference title and conference location
  • Enhanced duplicate checking
  • A new spell checker facility which allows the user to spell check the entire database in one go
  • Reference Manager users can now organise link files - PDFs, graphics and more - with their database to create a single file repository
  • Reference Manager Web Publisher allows users to post up to 15 Reference Manager databases to the web or to an Intranet using a Web Publishing Tool 

Reference Manager 12 is currently available on all Library Services clusters and is the version taught on the course Reference Manager: an introduction.

Compatibility Issues

  • Versions 12 runs under Windows XP (SP2 or later), Vista
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later or FireFox 2.0 or later is required for launching data in the web/URL Field and Open URL feature
  • Cite While You Write feature compatible with Word 2003, 2007
  • The Add-in feature is compatible with WordPerfect 10-12, X3
  • Reference Manager 12 converts databases from earlier versions
  • Reference Manager 12 will open databases created with earlier versions
