Exporting and Importing References

You can either directly export references or use a filter to transfer references into your Endnote or Reference Manager database.  For information about which databases use filters, and the name of the filter, please click on one of the links below.

Endnote users can also search some databases and catalogues directly from Endnote via a Connection File.   For more information about Connection files for Endnote please click on the link below.

Exporting and Importing References into Endnote and Reference Manager.

You can add references to Endnote and Reference Manager in a number of different ways.

  • Directly Exporting references.  Many databases such as Web of Science allow you to export directly into Endnote and Reference Manager.  You can search the database, mark the records you are interested in and then click on a link to directly export to reference software.  Items will be automatically transferred to the Endnote library or Reference Manager database of your choice.
  • Importing references using a filter.  Some databases do not export references directly and need a filter to put the information saved from the database into the correct fields in your Endnote library or Reference Manager database.  For  help and advice about which filters to use please go to the Filters page (see links above).
  • Searching online sources using Endnote and Reference Manager.  When you are in Endnote or Reference Manager you can connect to an online source such as a library catalogue and search for information and then copy the references into your Endnote or Reference Manager database.
  • Manually typing in references
