Endnote

Obtaining a Copy

You can obtain a personal copy (at a reduced price) from two places.

1.  A copy can be purchased from the Site Licence Software Office in the Learning Centre, more information and prices can be found at http://www.softwaresales.bham.ac.uk/az/endnote.shtml 

2.  A copy can be purchased from Adept Scientific.  Log in where it says "My Institution is a member of the UK Access Management Federation" and use your Active Directory University username and password.  You will then see a list of prices at a reduced rate.

You can also download a trial version from the ISI ResearchSoft homepage.

Many Schools make software available on University computers - check with your own School for details.

Versions of Endnote

The latest version of Endnote is version X2 for Windows and Mac OS X.

Additions to Endnote X2 include:

  • Finds full text articles automatically.  Endnote X2 will scan for full text availability and downloads and link it to the appropriate reference automatically.
  • Smart Groups.  You can save a search strategy and attach it to a smart group.  Any references matching the search strategy will be added to the Smart Group.
  • You can instantly connect to an online database and search for information.
  • Recover deleted references from the Trash.
  • Transfer Endnote web groups to and from the desktop easily
  • Uses new reference types, including aggregated database, Blog, Catalogue, Pamphlet, Serial publications and Standards

Improvements to Endnote XI include:

  • Designed for use with Windows 2000, XP and Vista
  • Customise groups to view and manage subsets of references
  • Cite While You Write with Microsoft Word 2007 for Windows
  • Interacts with Endnote Web to aid collaboration with colleagues and students
  • View and manage more reference details
    • view all authors for a reference in the Main Display list
    • organise up to 45 files - PDFs, graphics, PowerPoints and more - per reference using the "file attachment" field
    • transfer customised reference types between computers

Improvements to Endnote X include:

  • Easy linkage to PDF full text files
  • Up to 8 fields can be shown in the reference list display
  • Empty fields in the reference window can be hidden to avoid scrolling
  • Saving libraries to compressed files for backup or for sending to colleagues

Improvements to Endnote 9 include:

  • Improved speed and performance
  • Expanded multilingual support
  • Compatibility with Microsoft's Word "Track Changes" feature
  • Endnote 9 is currently available on all Information Services clusters and is the version taught on the course Endnote: an introduction.

Compatibility Issues

  • Versions 8,  9 and X for Windows only runs under Windows 2000 and XP
  • MS Word must be 2000 or above for versions 8 and 9
  • Endnote 8 and 9 are not backwards compatible.  This means that libraries created in Endnote 8 and 9 are not compatible with libraries created in version 7 or below.
  • Libraries or databases created in earlier versions will be converted to the new format when opened in version 9
